Marcel Breuer, 1936
Characterised by its radically efficient use of sheet plywood, the Cut-Out Chair by Marcel Breuer is an experimental design intended to maximise material, minimise production costs, and utilise the convenient qualities of plywood. Side panels simply cut from sheet material are strong enough to support a curved seat and backrest moulded from thin veneer.
The Cut-Out Chair’s uncompromising appearance is no less impactful today. The design demonstrates Breuer’s dedication to innovative construction and disregard for furniture-making traditions. Originally designed for Isokon but never produced, the Isokon furniture company has introduced the Cut-Out Chair into the collection as a dining or occasional chair, with or without arms.
